Aunty Edna’s wish was to return to country - Minjerribah
Aunty Edna’s wish was to return to one of her ancestral countries, Minjerribah (Stradbroke), the island of the sun and sea spirits, and to walk with her family on the lands in which her father and other family members rest and roam in their dreaming lands.
Joined by husband Bo, daughters Sherry and Karen and her grand and great-grandchildren, it was clear to the Ambulance Wish team just how deep a connection Aunty Edna has to her culture, people, history and family. It was a privilege to have fulfilled Edna’s wish and created forever memories for her and her family.
Ambulance Wish Queensland would like to thank our amazing wish team Jason, John, Hannah, Sharon, Ange and Kathryn, who delivered Aunty Edna’s Wish and to our specialist palliative care service partner St Vincent’s Private Hospital Brisbane.
Thank you also to the support we received from SeaLink providing transport for our Ambulance, Betty, support vehicle and family vehicles to and from Minjerribah. Thank you to Redland City Council for providing a marquee over the resting place at Dunwich Cemetery. And a special thank you to Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) for arranging a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony to enable Aunty Edna to walk through the healing and cleansing smoke and grounding her to country.
Ambulance Wish Queensland is proudly supported by the Queensland Government, and we thank the staff and volunteers at both Queensland Health and Queensland Ambulance Service who help our Palliative Care Queensland team to fulfil wishes and create memories forever.
