Volunteer Profile – Sue Neale
Name: Sue Neale
Occupation: Queensland Ambulance Service Advanced Care Paramedic
What does Palliative Care mean to you?
Palliative care to me, is the holistic care of a patient who is on their palliative journey. Making sure that the medical, physical and spiritual needs are met, and the emotional needs of the individual and their family and loved ones are included.
Why did you choose to volunteer with Ambulance Wish Queensland?
As a paramedic, I enjoy the challenge of making sure all of my patients needs are met. I saw Ambulance Wish as an extension of this; without the normal time pressures we face on-road. We can take time, to make sure our wish recipients and their families, can make meaningful memories together.
How do you see Ambulance Wish Queensland in the community?
I’ve been involved with Ambulance Wish since the beginning of the program, and the support from the general community is heart-warming. People generally, are very touched by our wish recipients’ stories, and are appreciative of the efforts the team goes to, to make sure we are providing memorable days for those involved.
How do you see Ambulance Wish Queensland impacting Wish Recipient’s and their friends and family?
I’ve seen first-hand, the profound impact our wishes have on those involved. There have been many tears, hugs and handshakes shared over the years, and it’s an immense privilege to be a small part of the team that makes these magical moments happen.
Do you have any key memories of a Wish you have been on?
Too many to list! Every wish is different, but the end goal is the same. I’ve been lucky enough to groove along at a concert, eat ice cream at Dreamworld, go for an impromptu dip in the ocean and have spent many beautiful moments, observing families surround their person with love. The simple things in life truly can mean the most, how fortunate we are to bear witness to this on a frequent basis. 🚑❤️🦋
