The Good Shepherd Home joins forces with Ambulance Wish Queensland to fulfil last wishes in Townsville

Palliative Care Queensland is excited to announce, The Good Shepherd Home in Townsville has officially become a local supporting sponsor of the Ambulance Wish Queensland Program. This partnership aims to enable the continued development of the Ambulance Wish Queensland program in the Townsville region, fulfilling the last wishes of those living with a life-limiting illness.

CEO of The Good Shepherd Home, Brian Matthews, shared the motivation behind supporting Ambulance Wish Queensland, stating, “When Louise O’Neill, CEO of Palliative Care Queensland, came to speak with me about the Ambulance Wish Queensland Program, I was deeply moved by the profound impact of the initiative. One of our residents, Jeanette, had her last wish fulfilled earlier this year at Pallarenda Beach. This experience solidified our commitment to align our mission and values with Ambulance Wish Queensland.”

Highlighting the importance of values, Brian added, “Ambulance Wish Queensland’s focus aligns seamlessly with our commitment to compassionate care. We are also optimistic about discussions with Ambulance Wish Queensland to expand the scope of wish fulfillment within the Townsville region.”

The impact of fulfilling last wishes extends beyond the individuals directly involved. Brian noted, “From the perspective of the Wish Recipient’s loved ones, having a tangible memory, like the beautifully published Memory booklets from Ambulance Wish Queensland, can aid in closure and the grieving process. It provides families with a cherished keepsake, allowing them to remember their loved ones in happier times.”

Reflecting on a past initiative, Brian recalled, “We undertook a similar project where Residents contributed to creating a biography booklet. It was an empowering experience for them, and the impact on family members was substantial as they received a tangible gift of memories.”

Expressing admiration for Ambulance Wish Queensland’s volunteers, Brian stated, “We are touched by the dedication of the paramedics and volunteers involved in the program. Their commitment to making these final wishes a reality is truly inspiring.”

The partnership between The Good Shepherd Home and Ambulance Wish Queensland exemplifies the power of collaboration between organisations with shared values. Together, we aim to bring comfort and joy to Wish Recipients on their palliative care journey and lasting memories for their loved ones.
