Volunteer Profile – Emily Whitaker

Name: Emily Whitaker

Occupation: Lead Paramedic

What does Palliative Care mean to you?

Palliative care can sound confronting when you’re unfamiliar with what it truly involves—but it’s about so much more than end-of-life care. To me it means cherishing moments, creating a safe and supportive environment, and ensuring comfort for those who need it most. It focuses on helping people live as fully and comfortably as possible, for as long as possible.

Palliative care is deeply personal. It’s about improving quality of life, managing symptoms, and supporting both individuals and their loved ones at any stage of illness—not just at the end. Ultimately, it’s about making every moment count.

Why did you choose to volunteer with Ambulance Wish Queensland?

I work as a full-time paramedic, and while I’ve had the privilege of caring for palliative patients, I often felt there was something more I could give. I would transport people from A to B, playing their favourite song, knowing it might be their final ambulance journey—and wishing I could do more for them.

Volunteering with Ambulance Wish has given me that opportunity. It’s allowed me to help create meaningful moments, support people in truly living, and be part of something deeply special. It’s brought a new level of job satisfaction—one that leaves me feeling fulfilled and whole after every wish.

I may simply be driving a wish recipient to their wish, but to them, it means so much more. And it’s that perspective that leaves me both humbled and incredibly grateful.

How do you see Ambulance Wish Queensland in the community?

At its heart, ambulance wish reinforces our shared sense of humanity by fostering both comfort, connection, and a sense of togetherness. It helps to shift the narrative around illness and dying, moving away from stigma and toward a celebration of life and the moments that truly matter.

How do you see Ambulance Wish Queensland impacting Wish Recipients and their friends and family?

The impact on wish recipients, as well as their families and friends, is overwhelmingly positive—they radiate joy and excitement. It is truly a privilege to witness. Rather than sadness, these moments are characterised by a shared sense of togetherness, connection, and genuine happiness.

Do you have any key memories of a Wish?

I remember assisting Vicki to the water’s edge in Sandgate so she could watch her grandchildren play. It was a beautiful, sunny day, and being by the water brought a deep sense of calm and peace. Surrounded by her husband and family, Vicki was able to fully embrace the moment.

It was truly an extraordinary experience to be part of, and I am incredibly grateful that Ambulance Wish made such a special day possible. It is a moment I will never forget, and one I know Vicki and her family will cherish forever.
